Eva Georgine "Elkbane"

(My Mom the Pilot)

That's mom on the left. It's the only picture I have of her related to her flying. She and two other girls owned a Piper J5 Cub. She also flew Luscombes. She would buzz the elk grazing near Lone Pine, CA before that became politically incorrect. Mom trained at inland airfields like Lone Pine and Blythe, because there was a war on. There was some concern that her J5 might be mistaken for a Japanese Zero and be shot down if she flew near the coast.

She gave up flying after the war, probably because four kids kept her pretty busy.

That's the letter from Jackie Cochran with a cartoon my mom added. That's her note at the bottom too. (Note the beautiful handwriting. Click on it for a better view.)

When my sister gets her "official" wings, that will make three generations of woman pilots in the family. Not too shabby!
