Academic Interests

For many years I have been interested in the interactive processes of theatre. What are the actual transactions taking place between performer and audience? This thing called Catharsis--what is actually happening to an audience member during his "willing suspension of disbelief?" Is catharsis free to operate in comedy and melodrama? When is it effective and why? Beyond that, my interests are evident in my meager offerings to academia.

Biographical information:

As Technical Director for the Old Globe Theatre for more than ten years, I was instrumental in the production of well over one hundred sixty shows including the original technical direction for Sondheim's Into the Woods, Neil Simon's Rumors and Jake's Women, the 1993 revival of Damn Yankees and the off-Broadway production of A. R. Gurney's The Cocktail Hour. In addition I provided the technical direction for several companies of Forever Plaid, including San Francisco, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica and the national touring show of James Lapine's Falsettos. I also served as the technical liaison for the Maly Drama Theatre of Leningrad and the Tbilisi State Puppet Theatre of Soviet Georgia during the San Diego International Arts Festival and the technical liaison for the Maxim Gorky Theatre of Vladivostock for their production of Chekov's Ivanov at San Diego State University. I was the automation programmer for the John Caird/John Napier musical Jane Eyre and continue to consult on stage automation projects for the La Jolla Playhouse, the South Coast Repertory, the San Diego Opera, the Dallas Opera,the American Conservatory Theatre and other theatres around the country.
